Helping Expectant and New Moms Prepare Their Dogs for a Safe, Calm, and Loving Home

Becoming a mom is one of the most beautiful and transformative journeys in life — and if you have a dog, it means preparing your furry family member for the big changes ahead. Our Mommy & Pup Training Program is specially designed for expecting and new mothers who want their dogs to adjust confidently and safely to the arrival of a baby. Whether you’re preparing for your newborn or navigating the early days of motherhood, this program supports you in creating a calm, balanced home where your dog and baby thrive together.

Why Moms Need the Mommy & Pup Training Program

Motherhood brings a whirlwind of change: disrupted routines, new sounds, and different household energy. Dogs, sensitive to shifts in their environment and pack dynamics, often react with stress or confusion. Without guidance, your dog might become overly excited, anxious, or even territorial — behaviors that are unsafe or overwhelming when caring for a baby.

Here are some common situations moms face — and how our training program helps:

The Unexpected Cry

Imagine you're rocking your newborn to sleep in the nursery when suddenly your baby starts crying loudly. Your dog, startled by the unfamiliar sound, begins barking, pacing, or whining — making it harder for your baby to settle and adding stress to your already busy hands. The Mommy & Pup Training Program gradually exposes your dog to recorded baby cries and other nursery sounds before the baby arrives, teaching them to remain calm and relaxed during these new noises.

The Busy Stroller Walk

As an expecting mom, you want to enjoy peaceful walks in the park with your dog and stroller — but your dog pulls on the leash, lunges at passersby, or gets distracted by every squirrel. This can make outings stressful or even unsafe. Our program incorporates stroller desensitization and leash training, so your dog learns to walk politely beside you and the stroller, allowing you to enjoy fresh air and bonding time with both your baby and dog.

Visitors and Overstimulation

When friends and family come to meet your newborn, your dog might get overwhelmed by new faces, sounds, and smells — barking, jumping, or crowding the baby. This not only makes visitors uncomfortable but can be unsafe for your baby. The program teaches your dog calm greeting behaviors and helps you create safe zones where your dog can relax during busy social visits.

Nursery Boundaries

You want your baby’s nursery to be a peaceful, secure space — but your dog insists on jumping on the crib or getting underfoot while you change diapers. We train your dog to respect off-limit areas and settle calmly in their own space, giving you the freedom to care for your baby without distractions or safety concerns.

Adjusting to Mom’s New Schedule

New moms quickly realize their time and attention are stretched thin. Your dog may feel neglected, leading to attention-seeking behaviors like barking or chewing. The Mommy & Pup Training Program guides you on how to adapt your dog’s routine, incorporate quality bonding time, and set clear expectations so your dog stays calm and secure, even when your focus shifts to your baby.

What You’ll Experience in the Mommy & Pup Training Program

The program is customized to your dog’s personality and your family’s unique lifestyle. Training sessions take place in your home and familiar outdoor spaces, ensuring your dog learns skills that fit seamlessly into your everyday life as a mom.

Key elements include:

Gentle desensitization to baby gear and sounds

positive introductions to strollers, swings, diapers, and baby noises help your dog feel safe and unbothered.

Boundary and “safe space” training

teaching your dog to settle calmly on their mat or in a designated area while you care for your baby.

Impulse control and obedience refreshers

reinforcing commands like sit, down, recall, and loose-leash walking to keep your dog focused amid distractions.

Routine adjustments

gradually shifting feeding times, walks, and attention to align with your changing schedule.

Calm leadership coaching

empowering you with the skills to communicate clearly and confidently with your dog during this exciting yet challenging time.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Mommy & Pup Training Program is a specialized in-home training service designed for expecting and new moms who want to prepare their dogs for the arrival of a baby. It focuses on calm behavior, respecting boundaries, desensitization to baby sounds and gear, and creating a safe, balanced home environment for both your dog and your newborn.

Ideally, expecting moms should begin training before the baby arrives so their dog has time to adjust to new routines, sounds, and household changes. However, the program is equally effective for new moms who want to reduce stress and improve their dog’s behavior during the early newborn phase.

Your trainer gradually exposes your dog to recorded baby cries, nursery noise, stroller movement, and baby gear in a controlled, positive way. This gentle desensitization helps your dog stay relaxed instead of startled, anxious, or overstimulated when the real baby comes home.

We refresh core behaviors like sit, down, recall, impulse control, calm leash walking, and boundary training. These essentials help your dog stay focused and responsive even when the household becomes busier or more unpredictable.

Absolutely. Whether your dog is nervous, overly excited, or simply needs structure, the program is customized to their temperament, energy level, and learning style. The goal is a calmer, more confident dog who can safely coexist with your newborn.

I’m so grateful to Andi for introducing Bentley to the community through the Best Friend Program and for helping him grow into the wonderful dog he is today — and setting such a strong foundation for his future. Bentley is my second dog with K9 Professional, and I came back because of the incredible experience and success I had the first time. The care, dedication, and results speak for themselves!

I had an amazing experience working with Andy at K-9 Professional! My dogs struggled with confidence and reactivity for quite a while, and I wasn’t seeing progress on my own. From the very first session, Andy zeroed in on the problem behaviors and explained what was happening in a way that made sense.

What really stood out was how practical the training was. Instead of sticking to a controlled environment, Andy used real-world settings so our dogs could learn how to respond in the moment. She was incredibly adept at finding just the right level of challenge — enough to stretch our pups’ comfort zone while still keeping it successful. We could see improvements almost immediately.

The K-9 Professionals Company overall was very easy to work with. Communication was clear and consistent, and scheduling was straightforward. One thing I really appreciated was that they sent video recaps of each session — it made practicing between appointments so much easier and helped me feel confident that I was doing the exercises correctly.

My dogs are noticeably more relaxed and more confident (as am I). I can now enjoy walking my dogs around town or at a park. I finally feel like we’re on the right path. I truly cannot recommend Andy and K-9 Professional enough!

Andi and John are true miracle workers. We started working with them when our year and a half old black lab just became a bit too much to handle. He had issues with walking on a leash, jumping, barking and reactivity towards strangers and other dogs. After a short few weeks, Hank was walking nicely on a leash by my side and learned how to calmly great people entering the home. Over the next months after that we started working out and about around strangers and other dogs and Hank became much more neutral in stressful environments. Now we no longer worry about bringing him out with us as we now know the proper ways to control stressful environments for him. I couldn't recommend them enough!

Andi from K9 Professional was fantastic with my dog, Molly! She came to our home to help with Molly’s impulse control issues, and friends and family noticed a big improvement after just 2 sessions. Andi was patient, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what she does. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for in-home dog training!

We are so thankful for K9 Professional and all Andrea and John have done for us with training our Doberman! We loved how they come into the home and witnessed all distractions first hand from day one to make sure that they are helping in all aspects of training. We started with them when Anubis was 3 months old and now at almost 10 months old we have officially graduated from the advanced training program! Not only do they train your dog with love but they also train you, support you and lift you up when you feel like you just aren’t getting it! From day one before any training session they were already available via text messages or phone calls whenever we had any questions. We will absolutely continue training with them to guarantee our Doberman has the best future possible.

Highest recommendation for Andi at K9 Professional! Andi is an amazing trainer, not only of dogs but of people too. My dog Jack was very reactive, couldn’t walk him around other dogs without lunging, growling, and barking. I’ve worked with several trainers over the years and until I trained with Andi no one has ever been able to help me. This is not a board and train, she doesn’t train your dog and hand him back to you. She taught both me and Jack — really me! — how to handle stressful situations and gave me the skills I needed to teach Jack how to calmly be around other dogs. I can’t thank her enough!

K9 professionals helped me make a difference in my dog’s daily behavior out in the real world. We did a lot of training classes prior and this was by far the best. They came to my house and helped me learn first in my own home how to get my dog to respect me, and then I was able to carry that out the skills in public. My dog’s behavior and leash walking skills are SO much better! Thank you!!

Andrea helped us beyond with our timid puppy. Her advice was spot on! We could see progress once we implemented Andrea’s techniques. She was so supportive… even providing recommendations beyond what we asked for. She was always readily available to answer any and all questions we had. Our pup is doing SO well… thank you Andrea💖

Andi is an extraordinary professional canine trainer! She teaches you the art of communicating with your dog on and off leash while maintaining complete control. She shows you how to engage with your dog and have fun while establishing healthy boundaries. She shows you how to tap into your dog’s own skill set and passion which makes them excited to work and train. She is a master professor on turning dog owners into dog handlers. When you successfully complete Andi’s training program you will notice a significant level of respect your dog will have for you. There was NEVER a harsh word spoken or a heavy hand, all the training is done with warmth, positivity, and appreciation for your dog. My husband and I have four dogs and we recently completed two months of training with Andi….the difference in our dogs’ demeanor and our handling skills is REMARKABLE! Andi doesn’t just work on dogs, she works on owners, building trust and connection deepening the bond with your canine. Our four dogs have very different personalities and have come with their own slew of issues (2 rescues and 2 from breeders) ranging from aggression, trust problems, fear, over excitement, excessive barking, pack tension, jumping, being overly protective of the property, anxiety, jealousy, etc. You name it, our dogs had it. We felt like we were living in total chaos with no control. Andi taught us how to establish harmony in our pack, in our home, when having guests over, introducing our dogs to unfamiliar environments, crate anxiety, separation problems, pulling on the leash, recall, and negative reaction to our farm equipment and farm animals. You have a problem and Andi has a solution! Her approaches are innovative and fun, yet easy to apply when you put in the work and are consistent. You will see amazing life changing results. Our dogs are substantially happier and look to us for direction. We have become the handlers Andi told us we could be! Andi is encouraging, supportive, enthusiastic, direct, and goal oriented. We had a wonderful time working with her (and John!) and HIGHLY recommend K9 Professional to anyone that needs help with their dog! No problem is too big or too small for Andi! The best part of her program is that your relationship with your dog will be the best it’s ever been and you will leave with a great wealth of information on handling and problem solving. You will learn how to communicate safely and effectively with your canine and as a result you’ll have an enjoyable environment at home.

Luna and Atlas came to us at 10 months old and we needed someone to help them become happy, healthy, well-adjusted members of our family. Andrea was the answer. The puppies love her (and so do we). We all learned so much. Thank you!
